What is dietary fibre?
Dietary fibre could be defines as anything that moves through gastro-intestinal tract and is not digested as food.
Refined foods are responsible for many diseases prominent in urban and rich societies. Due to this there is growing awareness to put back fibres in one’s diet. The major sources are plant cell wall material which is not digested by human enzymes. The high energy and low fibre foods like sugar or flour causes diseases by:
- Altered intestinal functions
- Increased energy intake which leads to obesity, diabetes and other diseases.
Common Foods - How body absorbs carbohydrates?
- Sugar/soft drinks: Shoot into the blood
- Starches, Bread or potatoes - Stream into the blood.
- Fruits: Flow into the blood
